Ever wonder the function of a leaf spring centerbolt? There are several more than you’d imagine!
Have you ever noticed on every leaf spring there is a bolt holding all the leaves together? Even though on most springs the bolt is not in the middle of the spring, it is still called the center bolt.
Besides holding all the leaves together, the center bolt serves other purposes.
Its main function is to locate the spring on the axle. Without the center bolt head locking into the hole in the axle’s spring seat, the axle would just slide back and forth over the spring.
If the head of the center bolt is on top of the spring the axle is over the spring, and if the head of the center bolt is on the bottom of the spring the axle is under the spring.
Also, the hole in each leaf that the center bolt goes through is the starting point for all the length measurements for each leaf. So that little bolt is really important!
