Mike,
I want to weld a small brake line bracket to one of my U-Bolts (which attach my leaf springs to the rear-end axle tube on a 1967 Cougar.)
I’m running 150 Lb. leaf springs which I purchased from you guys …
Is it OK to weld to U-Bolts?
Should I be concerned with the localized heating “weakening” my U-Bolts?
Thank You,
Clinton
Clinton,
During the welding process 2 pieces of steel are heated to such a high temperature that they melt together forming a bond.
When heated hot enough, steel can and does undergo chemical changes. Sometimes the changes make the steel stronger, and some times it makes the steel weaker.
U-bolts are part of the vehicle’s suspension system and like brakes, suspensions should be treated like a safety item.
A wise person never, ever messes with a vehicle’s safety systems.
No, it is not OK to weld on U-bolts or springs.
